Her heart pounded in her throat as she clutched her well worn stuffed bear to her chest. She chewed on her lower lip and looked away as the couple gave her a smile, struggling to stifle the tears welling in her eyes. The mean old woman shook her head and handed the papers back. “You cannot have that one; she is special.”
The man looked at his wife, who now clutched his arm. He winked at the girl and turned to the mean old lady standing in his way. “We want to give her a home where she is loved, not one where she is exploited by hungry monsters like you.”
“No, you do not understand. That girl, she is the monster. I am saving you from yourself. You go, go before she makes a meal of you.”
