Poetry: Society’s One-Way Mirror
This hopeful poem reminds me of what the holidays really should be about, helping those who are less fortunate. I didn’t have a lot to give, but I gave because it is right. The times will get tougher and we should help as much as we can. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy the piece.
Cold chill, December’s wrath
Breaking iron manacles and wills
The stout retreat to their homes
While warming themselves alone
But what of those with nothing?
They suffer the worst brunt of them all
The icy reality that life is not normal
Could truth be lies, comfort be agony
Existence behind society’s one-way mirror
We know they are there; we never want to be them
When you race around with arms full of goods
To make the falsity of society comfortable
The latest bells and whistles of the moment
Will never disguise the needs of others
Nor will it drown out their pain, or yours
Do what you can for these souls
Even if it is a small amount, it is something
For you never know when you will be on the other side
Of society’s one-way mirror
Thank you for sharing this! It’s something we need to be aware of because hardships are and seem more difficult this time of year…the weather and the holiday season.
Whatever you can do does indeed make a difference. And you’re right, you never know when it may be you that needs help.
