Dark Flash Fiction: Cold Screams

A Dark Flash Fiction piece dedicated to those damned cats mating outside my door and making me think someone was dying.

I awoke with a fright, hearing screams outside my door. I wondered what it was while the essence of the victim spilled over the wet asphalt. I should have opened the door. I should have intervened as if I were a shining knight. The life should have been saved. Instead, the woman died from her wounds, simpering on the ground until her heart stopped.
Now I lie in bed with covers drawn over my face as the glow from her spirit hangs over my body. She keeps me awake. She will not stop glaring at me with her dead eyes.

Lovely. I live in a college town, with students living across the street. Needless to say, they party all Friday and Saturday night, and occasionally (at about 3 AM) there will be a heated lover’s quarrel in the street, sometimes so heated that I wonder if I shouldn’t intervene.
I never do, but now maybe I will….

I live in a college town as well so I can sympathize with you there. It is the innate fear in all of us that we step into something we don’t want to deal with and make things worse for ourselves. Of course, there are law changes along with this, some towns would throw you in jail for even hearing the screaming while others would throw you in jail for trying to assist. Glad this piece gave more to think about than I thought. Thanks for the support Rob!
