Pirate Fantasy Flash Fiction: The Wicked Cat (Wreck)

The 11th entry in the Pirate Fantasy Flash Fiction series The Wicked Cat, the high seas adventure involving pirate, cursed birds, princesses and a little magic too. Thanks for reading and enjoy!

Brynn stormed up the stairs as she drew two pistols from her sash, taking her time to examine the weapon to assure they were ready to fire. As she reached the last step, she pulled back the hammers with a click. She pointed the gun in her right hand at Fodd sitting cross legged on the deck, his arms outstretched as he meditated in the morning sunlight. Brynn chewed on her lip as she let her eyes drift over his chiseled physique, the gun quavering as she struggled with her carnal feelings.

Fodd spoke to Brynn though he didn’t turn to see the gun in her hand, “You are here to execute me. I wonder why you have made the decision in haste.”

“It isn’t in haste, you water tosser. I know what you did and how you managed to attract those damned Hyril ships to us. I even know what you did to stop the tailwind we were enjoying until a few moments ago. I’m going to make this request once. Cast whatever spell you need and get us moving or else I promise, you will feel pain.” Brynn said.

Fodd laughed as he unhooked his legs, turned his head over his shoulder and stood. He brushed the dirt particles off his skirt as he offered a bright smile at the gun wielding captain, “You are mistaken, Captain. I did nothing to attract these ships as I was meditating since the sun set. You should cast your eyes on your crew to route the traitors out.”

Brynn growled, her finger squeezing on the musket’s trigger. The barrel rocked back as the lead bullets exploded out and streaked toward Fodd. The bullets bounced off a light-blue bubble as Fodd threw out his arms, his fingertips and eyes crackling with energy. Brynn dropped the empty gun in her hand as she pulled a musket from the sash with the left hand, firing another shot at the sea mage, “You activated the bell when you had no right, you Hyrilan spy!”

Another round slammed against the magical bubble but it didn’t cover the bitter laughter that left Fodd’s lips, “You believe I have love for the golden orchid? You believe the Duke would have gone to the trouble to hire a traitor so you could suffer? You are foolish, Captain. The bird has more sense than you do.”

“You leave that bootless bird out of this, witch! He might be an idiot but he is a captain and a member of this crew! I’m the only one who calls him a fool!” Brynn dropped her empty guns and pulled two more from her sash, firing at Fodd once more.

“Why do you waste your ammunition on a fruitless effort, Captain? I would consider it foolish!” Fodd bellowed.

“Who said I was trying to kill you with my bullets? If there is anyone that’s a fool here, it’s you! Do it now, boys!”

Fodd turned to see two large men struggling with Natt, pinning the cat to the ground with their massive frames. The cat howled in frustration as the men clamped metal bands behind the cat’s shoulders and above the hips. Fodd twisted and threw his hand open, pointing his palm toward the sailors pinning his familiar down. A light-blue electric ball built near his palm as he screamed in rage, pulling his hand back to throw his spell toward the assailants, “Leave her alone, currs!”

“Eight damn you, do it now!” Brynn screamed over another round of musket fire.

As the bullets deflected off the bubble protecting Fodd, the two sailors rolled away from Natt with chains in their hands. They pulled back hard, the chains straining against the metal bands attached to the cat. Fodd screamed in agony and dropped to his knees, the magical energy dissipating as he wrapped his arms around his torso. Natt angry howls died to weak mewls as she struggled for breath. Fodd shuddered as blood started to trickle from his mouth, his eyes rolled back until the whites were left.

Brynn tossed aside her empty guns, snapped her fingers at the sailors and pulled two more loaded guns from the sash. She slowly walked to Fodd, keeping her guns pointed that sea mage while she spoke. She turned her head toward the large railing, her voice loud enough for everyone to hear her on the deck, “That’s the thing you mages keep forgetting; you have a deep connection to your familiars. You were hoping we wouldn’t notice your cat was hiding in the shadows behind the crates but we knew it all along thanks to some aerial reconnaissance.”

Bluefeather fluttered down from his perch nearby, landing on Brynn’s shoulder with his chest puffed out. She snapped his beak toward Fodd before sticking out his tongue, hopping from side to side on Brynn’s shoulder, “Ye best remember ye are on me vessel, water tosser!”

“Here’s the deal, mage. You cast a tailwind, you cast a spell to obscure us in fog and then you get us to King’s Watch without getting us in a shipwreck. If I believe you are going to cause us harm, I will destroy your cat. If I think you will betray us by sinking us, I will destroy your cat. If you so much as urinate without my permission, I will destroy your cat and piss on the carcass to get your attention. Do I make myself clear?”

Fodd coughed, blood splattering on the deck with a slight hissing sound. He nodded, rolled over and thrust his fingers in the air; snapping them. A moment later a gust of wind blew, causing the sails to snap to life as they ruffled in the breeze. Brynn looked at her crew and nodded at them. They scooped the unconscious cat into their arms and walked down the opposite stairs. Brynn kept her guns pointed at Fodd as he pushed himself to his knees, spitting blood on the deck, “Bring in the fog or I swear…”

“You will have your fog, Captain,” Fodd commented.

“Ye best do as the lass says. She can be a harpy on her best days,” Bluefeather commented.

“Get off my shoulder, you worthless blue troll,” Brynn growled.

“Love ye too, lass.”
